In Brief

Softball players wanted

THE Australian Defence Softball Association National Championships will be held at RAAF Base Richmond from November 18-22.
The ACT, which incorporates the Wagga region, will field a men’s and women’s team in the championships.
Interested players should contact ACT ADF Softball representative Wing Commander Peter Davis on (02) 6265 6406 or e-mail peter.davis@defence.gov.au and provide the following details, rank, name, service number, contact phone numbers (work and home), as well as any softball experience, including years and level played and preferred positions.

Calling all ACT Army golfers

Because of a lack of interest, Army will not be fielding a team in the ACT Defence Interservice Golf Competition.
Despite this, ACT Army co-ordintaor Sgt Brett Fewson has called for any interested golf players based in the ACT to make themselves available.
He has organised a practice round at Federal Golf Club on either October 1 or 4, subject to confirmation – cost $30.
Sgt Fewson said interested personnel should send him name, handicap, club membership and contact details.
  • For further information, contact Sgt Brett Fewson - ACT Army Co-Ordinator (Captain ADFGA) Ph: (02) 62658358.

Age shall not weary them

THE Defence Warriors, an over-50s men’s team representing the ADF Touch Association (ADFTA), is set to play at the World Masters Games in Melbourne in early October.
The tournament will be conducted at Albert Park Reserve between October 8-12.
Team manager Sqn-Ldr Cliff Winnett, based in Melbourne, has been busy over the last few months completing a host of administrative tasks required, while other team members – WO1 Reg Jones and WO2 Norm Thirkell – have been busy chasing sponsorship to assist this aging body of men enjoy a successful tournament.
Team spokesman WO1 Greg Chamberlain said he was confident of success as the team is based on a strong nucleus of Defence players who have represented ADFTA at national level.
WO1 Chamberlain has also imported a few civilian players from his local Lismore area into the team such as former Australian Rugby League halfback Johnny Mayes.
As well as being an excellent tournament, participation in the World Masters Games also provides ADFTA’s oldest team with an opportunity to begin preparing for the next National Touch League Seniors Championships in March next year.
Look for some fast speed action photos and results of our Warriors over 50s efforts soon.

Men’s netball nationals

In a first for the ADF Netball Association (ADFNA), a men’s competition will be held in conjunction with the women’s and mixed championships at this year’s national titles in Sydney from October 14-18.
ADFNA president Capt Carla Watts said the association had decided this year’s nationals was the ideal arena to decide the champion men’s team in the ADF.
“Any male players out there wanting to get in a team should contact myself or Lt Simon Jackson as soon as possible,” she said.
The 2002 national titles will be held at the Parklands Sports Centre at Fox Studios in Sydney, featuring combined Service teams from South Queensland, North Queensland, Victoria, ACT, NSW and Northern Territory.
Following the championships, national ADF teams will be selected from the women’s, men’s and mixed competitions for the Arafura Games in Darwin in May 2003.
