THE
Army took out the annual South East Queensland Inter-service Touch
Football Competition against the RAAF recently despite the RAAF
having the home ground advantage.
One
day before the Invitational Trophy contested by Brisbane
Area Army, Darling Downs Army, RAAF Amberley and SQ Police - was
handed to the long arm of the law in a clean sweep, with the RAAF
coming in second place.
Serving
as a precursor to the traditional inter-service comp, the invitational
series also allowed selectors to begin fine-tuning teams to contest
the ADFTA nationals to be held at Randwick Barracks in December.
The
inter-service comp kicked off with the over 30s in a tight match
with Army winning right on the bell, 4-3.
The
tables were then turned in the over 35s, with the RAAF blitzing
the Army 9-2 in a fast-paced encounter.
Typically,
the over-40s was a rugged match and by half time the RAAF led
4-1.
Far
from finished, the Army seniors displayed some flare from the
past and fought back defiantly, only to go down 5-4.
With
the RAAF leading two games to one, the Army female team knew they
had to win to keep the contest alive - doing exactly that and
winning 4-3.
Down
to the wire, with the 2002 Inter-service Championship at stake,
the Armys male open team came out firing but managed only
to secure a narrow 2-1 lead at the break.
The
half time briefing from the coach left no room for doubt, with
the Army team trouncing the RAAF in the second half, winning the
match 7-2, and retaining the inter-service title.
