The thirst for first

Sgt Scott Upston, ADFA, competing in the US.

By Cpl Alisha Carr

AN AUSTRALIAN MP recently travelled to the US to compete in a Natural Athlete Strength Association (NASA) Championship, coming home with nine first-place trophies.

Sgt Scott Upston, ADFA, said he competed in two competitions while overseas.

“One was the Bluegrass Classic, which was held in Kentucky and the other was the NASA competition,” he said.

“In Kentucky I competed in Powersports, which consists of three lifts – a strict curl, bench press and dead lift.

“I won my class – 227lbs pure – and I also won the strict curl and dead lift as individual lifts.”

He said he broke four state records but because he was not a resident of Kentucky, they could not be recorded.

“I broke the records in my curl, bench press, dead lift and in my overall total.

“I then won the overall Powersports competition against all weight classes. I also qualified for the World Cup.

“I competed in the NASA World Cup in Oklahoma City and won my weight class.

“I placed second overall in the Powersports once they tallied up the results from all weight classes.”

He said his best lifts were strict curl – 85kg, bench press – 170kg and dead lift – 272kg.

“No supportive equipment can be used except for your weight belt.”
