THE
Army Biathlon Ski Team came a close second in the Interservice Cross
Country Skiing and Biathlon competition this year.
Despite superior shooting ability, the Army team was unable to haul
back the Air Forces lead in skiing times in the final patrol
event.
The competition was held at the biathlon rifle range at Whiskey
Flat, near Mt Hotham, in the Victorian Alps last month.
The overall best new talent for male competitors was awarded to
Sig Bradley Machin, 126 Cdo Sig Sqn, and female competitor Lt Gail
Johnstone, ALTC.
Army champion male biathlete was Sgt Mick Kelly, School of Arty,
and the Army champion female biathlete was Capt Jodi Phillips, 7
Sig Regt.
Biathlon incorporates cross country skiing and target shooting in
service teams, which tests fitness, teamwork and marksmanship.
Competitors are subject to both physical stress and extreme environmental
conditions.
A week of training was conducted before the competition under the
watchful eye of Australian Junior Biathlon coach Bob Cranage.
This training put new competitors on a steep learning curve and
provided reinforcement of both skiing and shooting techniques for
old hands.
The weather varied from blowing snow to clear skies and ensured
all skiers were put through their paces.
The performances of some up and coming stars bode well for the future
strength of the Army team.
New and rising stars of the sport were apparent with entries up
this year.
The sport is open to full and part-time service personnel and those
