September
11 reminds us to again ask: What do we truly value?
At the time we were all caught with the shock but now that we look
back and reflect we can examine our values to see whether they have
enduring quality.
We cannot forget the horror of the events and our questions at the
time of how people could do those things to innocent civilians.
But we should not stop there. We can and we must move on to look for
the ways in which we can promote goodness, justice and truth in our
community and across the world.
As Australians we bring the ability to pull together for freedom,
democracy and for one another, whatever our background.
At the same time that we support our troops engaged in the campaign
against terror we face our own humanity and the humanity of all people.
We diminish ourselves if we allow the atrocities committed by others
to turn us into inhuman people capable of similar evil.
And above all we go on in our search for the deepest values in life.
We honour those who serve, especially those who have died; we express
our dependence on God as life is so much bigger and more complex than
we are; and we strive for peace and reconciliation in our world.
