Critical Tasks
SOLDIERS of all ranks have been called to exercise “initiative and ingenuity” by new CA Lt-Gen Peter Leahy in the face of new challenges. Lt-Gen Leahy, who assumed command of the Army on June 28 from Gen Peter Cosgrove, made his call in his first Order of the Day.
Timor back pay
Nearly 1450 soldiers, sailors and airmen who served in East Timor with Op Tanager between April and November last year will notice a one-off increase in their pay on July 18 as they receive unpaid United Nations allowances.
In the dark of the night
SOLDIERS in several major locations around Australia will soon have access to purpose-built facilities for night-fighting training. CA-designate Maj-Gen Leahy visited the RMC centre recently to see first hand the capabilities and training possibilities of the facility..
Air defence boost
AUSTRALIA'S ground-based air defence systems will be enhanced dramatically with development of an air defence training simulator in Woodside, South Australia. Additional missile systems are also part of the plans announced recently by Defence Minister Robert Hill.
CareFlight flies into help 8 Bde
NRMA CareFlight recently took part in a unique training exercise at Holsworthy Barracks, working with 8 Bde Health Coy to test its new mass casualty response procedures. The exercise was the first time CareFlight has conducted a training simulation on the Holsworthy range.

BRISBANE-based 6RAR recently celebrated its 37th birthday at Gallipoli Barracks, Enoggera, with a Trooping of the Regimental Colour.
Prize for best 'Infantry' article
THE Australian Defence Credit Union (ADCU) has agreed to sponsor the biannual Australian Infantry magazine by providing a $500 cash incentive for the best published article. Infantry's Head of Corps, Maj-Gen Mark Evans, will appoint a panel to select the best three submissions to go forward for final determination.
The workhorse of UNTAET
For Force Logistic Squadron (FLS) 4, the period from December last year to June this year was the busiest since UNTAET took over from INTERFET.

Our worthy causes
During FLS4's tour there were many opportunities for members to become actively involved in projects designed to benefit the people of East Timor. One such member was FLS 4's Preventative Medicine person, Sgt Paul Malcolm.
The ways and means of logistic distribution
FLS 4 Tpt Tp was responsible for the distribution of freight and personnel by road, sea and air within East Timor. To achieve this, the troop employed specialised operators and a variety of equipment.
