Safety first
THE ADF should implement a physical fitness and sport safety strategy to increase health and reduce related injuries in personnel, according to a report commissioned by Defence.

Enduring mateship
CAVALRY soldier Cpl Jason Sturgess was laid to rest in a military funeral in Brisbane on March 1, the day the Army celebrated its 101st birthday. Cpl Sturgess, 28, died when his M113 APC was involved in a single-vehicle accident on Hervey's Range Road west of Townsville on February 22.

Parl Sec is shocked by removals fiasco
The new Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister for Defence, Fran Bailey, has strongly criticised DHA and warned she'll 'be watching' their performance following widespread complaints about Christmas removals.

A day marked by remembrance
THE Army's birthday was likened to a family celebration tinged with sadness by DCA Maj-Gen Peter Leahy, officiating the Canberra ceremony on March 1. "Our family is hurting today, thinking of the funeral services in Perth and Brisbane," he said.

Jumping into Jervis Bay
HOW many units do you know that can provide pilots, lawyers, doctors or an HR consultant within their military ranks, as well as meeting their ADF roles and tasks? Well, 1 Cdo Regt can.

There's no room for Jack
One blazing hot afternoon, around a scrubby tree out in the middle of nowhere, I sat with a group of soldiers. I was a new chaplain back then and still getting used to the Army "way".

RMC wants leaders
Soldiers who want to be leaders should apply to RMC, according to its new Commandant. Brig Mike Paramor has taken the reigns of Duntroon from Brig Maurie McNarn, who left after two very successful years at the college.

Farewell to a hero
WHEN told of being recommended for the Victoria Cross (VC), Sir Roden Cutler, then a 25-year-old lieutenant from Sydney, is claimed to have said the last thing he wanted to do was walk around sporting a medal. Why? Because it would set him apart from the other chaps, of course.

Darwin's agony, 60 years ago
SOLDIERS from 1 Bde were a focal point at a recent ceremony in Darwin commemorating the 60th Anniversary of the Japanese attack on the city during WW2. As air raid sirens wailed across the city's foreshore, sappers from 1CER commenced a simulated barrage of enemy fire that swept across more than 1000 veterans and spectators gathered at Darwin's Cenotaph during a re-enactment of the first raids on February 19, 1942.

Compound interest pays off in exercise
Unfortunately there is still much misinformation and misunderstanding regarding the use of isolated exercises. Many still consider, for example, that leg extensions will shape and tone the legs more than squats or leg pressing… unfortunately this misinformation is as technically accurate as those "'do this arm program and have 20inch biceps in two days" protocols.

Campaign on the veldt
AUSTRALIA will take on the might of South Africa's Defence Force when the Army's rugby union team tours during the next two weeks. The tour is the first time an Army rugby team has toured South Africa. The 30-member squad will face games with a regional Defence Force team in Pretoria and in Cape Town.
