Ausbatt sees last of canvas living

January 31, 2002

Moleana locals chip in to put the finishing touches on works designed to make future Ausbatt rotations feel more at home.
WHEN elements of the 2RAR Bn Gp move en mass to occupy their new, purpose-built compounds along East Timor's border they will find the contrast remarkable.

After two years of rotations through the Australian AO in the western district, life under canvas will be no longer.

Eleven-by-elevens will be replaced with air-conditioning, Internet and DVDs in a long-term establishment, which will become the firm base for future Ausbatt units.

$15 million has been assigned to the mammoth complex of messes, kitchens and aircraft hangars with living accommodation for all concerned.

The facilities are spread over three locations to cater for Ausbatt elements spread along the border AO.

Headquarters and administrative elements will be accommodated at Moleana and there will be company positions opened at Maliana and Aidabeleten.

A level-one medical facility will be sited at Moleana along with a Q-store, four helo LZs, an armoury and more.

The other two locations will facilitate rotating rifle companies and all of their associated support elements.

After a series of delays caused by land-lease negotiations and the practicalities of site remoteness, the first of its new tenants should be occupying the position by February.
