HMAS Armidale – Attack Two (LCDR A.R. Powell) recently played impromptu host to a delegation from a joint research program while conducting an Operation Resolute patrol in the vicinity of Cape Wessel in the Northern Territory’s north-east.
The party included Dhimurru Land Management, NT Parks and Wildlife, Northern Land Council and Gumurr Marthakal Sea Rangers who were all conducting research into the gold ringed bandicoot on Marchinbar Island where Armidale was at anchor in Jensen Bay. Commanding Officer Tony Powell went ashore and invited the members for a tour of Armidale and took the opportunity to discuss surveillance systems in place in northern Australia and how both Navy and researchers alike can benefit from increased cooperation on reporting foreign fishing vessels.
After camping on the beach for over four days, the hot meal and hospitality put on offer by the ship’s company was warmly welcomed. The crew also provided fresh water and technical services. The favour was well returned when the crew went ashore for dinner including fresh crayfish with meat and potatoes cooked traditional style. Many crew members were also provided with an exclusive tour of a number of sites of historical importance to the locals. |
