The streets were lined with cheering kids as the NHQ SA cycling team rode into town.

OK, not all the streets were lined but Finch Road in Gawler did host a cheering throng from Gawler East Primary School as the cyclists completed their three-day visit to the Barossa region.

The NHQ SA cyclists donned their Brand Navy lycra on Wednesday, May 30 and departed Gawler for Tanunda Primary School 34km away.

The group gave a presentation on life in the Navy which was met with enthusiasm by students who lined the footpaths, rather than the streets, as the cyclists rode into the school grounds.

A mock PT test produced some stiff competition and a draw was pronounced so the final two sit up competitors could go home when the bell rang.

Day two saw the team pedal from Tanunda to Kapunda Primary School. No one lined the streets of Kapunda as the weather was slightly inclement; however there were some very enthusiastic responses to the presentation, particularly from the Year 1 students who were obsessed with sailors eating oranges – no scurvy in our Navy kids!

Friday, June 1 was the longest day in the saddle for the team who rode from Kapunda back to Gawler to visit Gawler East Primary School where students had an obsession with sharks.

The team rode about 100km over the three days but more importantly did some valuable community engagement work. There are sure to be more recruits from the Barossa region in coming years!
