A strong WA based Navy team dominated the combined Army Air Force team in the recent inter-service rugby union clash. The team, coached by the astute Steve Thomas, played to the game plan with tight forward play before delivering quality possession to the centres.
The forwards were led by strong performances from Johns and Rushforth while in the backs Stratford and Edwards found plenty of space. Navy led 24-0 at half-time with tries to Stratford (2), Edwards and Bertoncin.
The second half for Navy started a bit disjointed following some half time changes.
Army/AirFoce capitalised on this and scored the first points of the half. The conversion was unsuccessful.
The try stung Navy and in very short time Halliday and Hill worked the ball downfield for Stratford to go in again. Old heads Bertoncin and Boardman kept the game tight and re established forward domination.
A bit of fatigue snuck into the game and it was another 10 minutes before a youthful Scott Christie pounced on a loose kick and set up the try of the match. Edwards converted and that closed the scoring at 41-5.
Navy best was Andy Rushforth. Navy Captain Andrew Bertoncin was very pleased with the win and congratulated all involved in getting the rugby going in the West. |
