As reported in Navy News, June 28, 2007; the 2007 Defence Safety Awards, sponsored by the Occupational Health, Safety and Compensation Branch was held in Canberra on Monday, June 18, 2007. The awards were presented by Chief of the Defence Force ACM Houston, in the presence of Service Chiefs and other guests including the Minister Assisting the Minister for Defence and the Minister For Veterans’ Affairs; Bruce Billson. The Defence Safety Awards recognises and rewards innovative excellence as well as continuing to raise the profile and awareness of OHS related programs. The winning trophy for the Best Workplace Health and Safety Management System, Category 2, was accepted by Commander Greg Chesher of the Navy’s SUBSAFE Program. This program demonstrated a very clear management commitment and a high degree of integration from its inception in 1996. Utilising the Defence Restricted Network, the SUBSAFE program has systematically recorded, investigated and implemented solutions to identified hazards on a risk based priority.

Commendations were awarded to:
- HMAS Mermaid
- Safety Culture Improvement Program
- Navy’s Amphibious and Afloat Support Group
- Marine Boarding Party Ladder

Of the 15 Encouragement Certificates issued, Navy received 11.

All entries from the previous year’s Navy Safety Awards are submitted to the Defence Safety Awards, which is the gateway to the Safety Rehabilitation and Compensation Commission (SRCC) Safety Awards. Last year, Navy had two entries that made it to the final stages of the SRCC awards with HMAS Anzac winning their category. Seaworthy 04/07 refers. Nominations for the 2007 Navy Safety Awards are encouraged and continue to be sought. Nominations will close on September 14, prior to judging in October and the award ceremony is planned for November.
