Defence Education Training and Development (DETD) introduced the ADF Higher Education Advance Standing (ADFHEAS) scheme to allow ADF members to use their Defence-provided education and training to gain access to university courses.
The scheme is currently offered to officers who have met specified requirements, but DETD is negotiating an expansion of the ADFHEAS scheme to include other ranks, vocational education and training for “advance standing” or “credit” into specific university courses.
The University of Newcastle already has in place pathways for other ranks to both undergraduate and postgraduate programs.
ADFHEAS scheme participants may also be eligible for funding under the Defence Assisted Study Scheme or Civil Schooling Scheme.
Completed Defence education and training can count as “advance standing” or “credit” towards specific higher education qualifications offered by universities participating in the scheme.
The number of universities across Australia participating in the ADFHEAS scheme has grown from 13 to 18 since its launch.
