RAS Team mascot needs a name

The replenishment-at-sea (RAS) team on fleet oiler HMAS Success has got itself a mascot, a stuffed toy camel. The camel’s minder is PO Paul Lane (pictured right).

Paul’s fiancee ABSN Simone Sweeney found the camel in a shop while she was on shore leave from HMAS Melbourne in The Gulf.

“She thought it was very ugly but interesting, so she sent it to me,” Paul recalls.

The camel did a watching brief when Paul and team went through their paces during STARDEX 2002.

“I haven’t broken anything since it arrived,” he said.

The RAS camel is not the first mascot on the ship, the cargo section has a seal as its mascot.

The camel is reportedly very popular throughout the ship but there remains one problem. It needs a name.
