ANZAC Rebels win
July 24, 2000
The normally sedate soccer pitch of Sentosa Island, Singapore, was transformed
into a frantic blur of boots and leather as the HMAS ANZAC Rebels took on
the boys from HMAS SYDNEY and the local expat Wombats, in a round robin
Aussie Rules challenge.
The three teams braved the stifling conditions to produce some slick play
and impressive skills.
The first match between the ANZAC Rebels and the local Wombats was a fast
and furious encounter that ended in the favour of the acclimatised Wombats.
A fresh SYDNEY side then took it to the local lads but again the home team
took the points.
The final encounter was a matter of pride for both the ships, and the unsubstantiated
claims from the previous night's pre-match discussions at the Terror Club
could finally be resolved.
Both teams hit the leather hard and fast from the first bounce and it was
obvious to the crowd that this would be no lighthearted game.
Early goals to the Rebels looked promising but they were pegged back by
a determined SYDNEY.
Each individual on both teams showed true pride and determination to play
out the last 15 minutes of footy and, with a constantly changing lead, spectators
were on the edge of their seats.
The game remained neck and neck until the last minute when the Rebels banged
one home on the run and took the lead by two points.
It was all over bar the shouting, or maybe not as SYDNEY gave one last effort
and surged into a barrage of impenetrable Rebel backmen.
The siren sounded and the boys collapsed in the heat, the Rebels victors
by two points.
ANZAC and SYDNEY participate in Exercise Flying Fish before they returning
to Singapore where they were to take each other on again in the next battle
of the titans.
