Images of INTERFET

July 24, 2000

An interactive CD ROM featuring images of the successful Australian-led INTERFET operation and UN Civilian Police contingent in East Timor, was launched by Acting Defence Minister, Bruce Scott, at Victoria Barracks, Sydney, last month.

Images of INTERFET contains about 68 minutes of video and more than 1000 searchable images, mostly taken by defence photographers.

Proceeds from the sale of the CD ROM will benefit underpriveleged children in Salesian orphanages in East Timor.

Speaking in Sydney at the launch, Mr Scott said the CD ROM was a powerful account of the international community's six month involvement in East Timor from September last year until INTERFET handed over to UNTAET in March.

"Images of INTERFET provides a window into the sometimes hazardous and always demanding existence of those who saw service in East Timor…and will serve as a memento of their selfless-sacrifice," Mr Scott said.

Images of INTERFET provides an historical and educational account of the notable contribution to the rehabilitation and development of East Timor, and contains an introduction by former INTERFET Commander, Major General Peter Cosgrove.

Speaking at the launch, he said the CD ROM's images conveyed the legendary stoicism and courage of the East Timorese people.

"It is a most useful and attractive memento of a significant part of Australia's history and will be a tremendous adjunct to schools and centres of learning," Major General Cosgrove said.

"It is a useful public insight into the operation, mostly through images, but also through sound, and will provide a mechanism for raising funds for the people of East Timor."

Produced by Multilocus Interactive, Images of INTERFET is available for purchase from Myer Direct and Australian Defence Credit Union branches nationwide.
