CANBERRA "nose" how to have fun

July 24, 2000

HMAS CANBERRA with her nose
The chilly Western Australian weather had little to do with the outbreak of red noses on HMAS CANBERRA.

The ship's company and the ship itself donned red noses for the Sudden Infant Death Syndrome Foundations annual fundraising event…Red Nose Day.

HMAS CANBERRA, alongside Fleet Base West, wore a ship sized red nose to help raise money for SIDS research.

SIDS is the number one cause of infant deaths in Australia and although the Foundation reported a decrease in deaths last year, there is still an average of four babies killed by SIDS each week.

As with all charities, finances provide a constant challenge and it was with pleasure that the ship's company donned red noses for this worthy cause.

CMDR Tony Aldred and HMAS CANBERRA have become well known for their dedication to fundraising and charities, donating funds to the Prince Margaret Hospital through skydiving, TS ANZAC Sea Cadets, Sir David Martin Foundation and of course SIDS.

This year CANBERRA sold all her Red Nose merchandise and raised a considerable amount.

Many thanks go to all the ship's company, contractors and visitors, who helped make the special day a success.
