Promoted on USN's oldest ship July 24, 2000
WO Roach is posted to the US as a member of the ANZAC Ship Helicopter Project Team at Kaman Aerospace facilities in Bloomfield Connecticut. The venue for the promotion ceremony is one that was steeped in history. As the world's oldest commissioned warship still afloat the USS CONSTITUTION, affectionately known as "Old Ironsides", was constructed over the period 1794-1797. Launched in 1797 her earlier exploits included participation in the war of 1812-1815 with Great Britain. In 1997 she set sail out of Boston under her own power for the first time in 116 years. USS CONSTITUTION today is a permanent attraction on Boston Harbor and a living memorial to all those who have gone down to the sea in ships. Further information can be found at the web site "www.ussconstitution.navy.mil". WO Roach has been a member of the team for the past two and half years. The project team has been working closely with Kaman during the development and construction phase of the helicopter. Andrew is anticipating a return to Australia later this year to assume a new position as the senior maintenance coordinator in 805 Squadron. 805 Squadron will support the 11 SH-2G(A) Kaman Super Sea Sprite helicopters that will be introduced into service as a potent part of the ANZAC class of ships weapon's system.
