Wave swamps RHIB

July 24, 2000

HMAS SYDNEY
Royal Navy sailors from HMS NEWCASTLE have plucked two Royal Australian Navy sailors from the sea off Singapore.

The sailors, from HMAS SYDNEY, were in a RHIB when an unexpected waved capsized the craft. The pair was thrown into the water along with camera equipment.

At the time the two sailors were doing a ship's transfer as part of Exercise Flying Fish 2000.

They were returned to SYDNEY shaken but not hurt.

Speaking of the incident, the Maritime Commander, RADM John Lord, said: "High levels of training by ship's personnel ensured a rapid response to recover the two sailors."

RADM Lord has ordered an investigation of the incident.
