ARUNTA's links with Alice Springs

June 28, 2000

Three members of ARUNTA's PR team flew Alice Springs for a good will visit.

The purpose of the visit was to meet new organisations and rekindle the friendships developed during ARUNTA's last visit when the ship's company exercised its their freedom of entry and entered the Henley-on-Todd regatta.

The trip included visits to the mayor, local MPs, the Arrente tribe at Hermannsburg Mission, the Arrente Tribal Council, and the ship's charity - the St Mary's Mission, to name a few.

All groups expressed their pride in having a RAN warship named after them and hoped the sailors could come back as soon as time allowed.

While the ship was berthed in Sydney earlier this year, women from the Arrente tribe took up the invitation to visit the ship.

Members of the tribe had been performing at the Royal Easter Show and the visit was the first to a Warship for many of them
