By any measure, HMAS Success’ three-and-a-half month deployment up top shaped up as a resounding success.
HMAS Success (CMDR A.R. Davis) has been involved in six operations since departing FBE on May 8 including Operations Relex II, Astute, Cranberry, Resolute and international operations with the United States Navy (USN); Op Java Assist and in support of USN operations in the Southern Philippines.
During Op Relex II, Success, together with HMAS Adelaide, was assigned to Op Astute.
On transit to Singapore, she was assigned to support the USN task group travelling to Java, Indonesia, to provide humanitarian assistance from the aftermath of an earthquake (Op Java Assist).
Success provided a dual RAS of liquid cargo to USS Essex and USS Harpers Ferry. She also embarked USN personnel from both ships to be landed in Singapore utilising Essex’s UH-1B Iroquois helicopter.
Success embarked food, stores and fuel during an overnight logistic visit to Singapore. She then steamed north east to rendezvous with USNS Mercy and USS Momsen who were providing humanitarian assistance and maritime patrolling in the Sulu Archipelago.
During Op Cranberry, Success assisted HMAS Dubbo apprehend and escort seven illegal Foreign Fishing Vessels (FFV) Type III Ice Boats to Darwin.
During a subsequent patrol, Success became the first Major Fleet Unit to be assigned to Op Resolute, the new operation which combines Op Cranberry and Op Relex II.
