An estimated 300,000 people lined the shores of Sydney Harbour on January 26 to celebrate Australia Day 2005. They saw and heard the Navy in action.

The Navy’s participation in the special day was replicated in other centres around the nation.

The RAN played a lead role in Sydney. HMAS Parramatta was the VIP ship being positioned at the ammunition buoy mid-harbour.

HMAS Diamantina provided services as the media boat.

The sail training ship Young Endeavour led the parade of sail across the harbour while the northern end of Garden Island was used by the Army for is gunfire salute.

To wow the huge crowd was an 817 Squadron Sea King helicopter.

The versatile helicopter carried a huge Australian National Flag up and down the harbour as a massed flotilla of ships and small craft paraded.

During the afternoon a Sea King and its crew demonstrated how it would do a rescue at sea with a diver being winched to safety from Farm Cove.

A day earlier a clear lower deck was held at HMAS Watson to present an Australia Day Medallion to AB Joanne Andrews for her charity fundraising.

In a ceremony in Newcastle its Lord Mayor, Councillor John Tate invested CAPT Bruce Kafer with the Australian Merchant Navy Commendation Award.

T
he award was for his services as Hydrographer of Australia from 2000 to 2004.

It was a big day for CAPT Kafer who also received a Conspicuous Service Cross for his hydrographic work.
