The
training, experience and skill sets of Defence staff will in
future be formally recognised by the recent accreditation of
three qualifications in the field of Defence Public Affairs.
The qualifications are comprised of Certificate III, Certificate
IV and Diploma levels, and are made up of a number of competencies
selected from nationally recognised and accredited training
packages.
Work is continuing on the Advanced Diploma level.
The qualifications have been endorsed by the ACT Accreditation
and Registration Council (ACTARC) through the sponsorship of
the Director of Training Systems Policy (DTSP), and will now
be placed under the scope of the Defence Learning Services Network
(DLSN) as a Registered Training Organisation.
The qualifications are aligned to new training courses in public
relations, media skills and organisational communications, and
are structured to suite a broad range of employment circumstances
and experience levels throughout Defence.
The accreditation of these qualifications provides a mechanism
for the professional development all Defence Public Affairs
staff.
The Director General Public Affairs (DGPA), Brigadier Mike Hannan,
initiated the development of these qualifications following
a recommendation by the Chiefs of Staff Committee (COSC) to
introduce a Military Public Affairs Personal Development and
Training System.
This recommendation was subsequently expanded to include all
Defence personnel including the Australian Public Service.
Much of the development work was carried out by LCDR Darrell
Johnson, a Training Systems specialist in the Naval Reserve.
