CMDR Phil Orchard addresses students during a Naval ceremony at Ocean Reef Primary school.

CMDR Phil Orchard addresses students during a Naval ceremony at Ocean Reef Primary school.

The students of WA’s Ocean Reef Primary School are anchored down to their studies, thanks to close links with the Navy.

The CO of HMAS Stirling, CMDR Phil Orchard, has presented Ocean Reef, the establishment’s adopted school, with an anchor to enhance further the close relations between it and the base.

Also present at the ceremony were personnel from Stirling and HMAS Warramunga, who also established ties with the school since homeporting in the west.

Stirling became involved with Ocean Reef in 1998, when the school began a program to adopt a nautical theme. It has become known as SSS Ocean Reef, the SSS acronym standing for “State School Ship”.

In support of the nautical flavour, the school has a rank structure among its student body and each year students are awarded promotion certificates.

Awards are presented to students who maintain a caring attitude towards the wellbeing of their peers and contribute towards the effective running of school events.
