HMAS Huon (LCDR Barry Jones) marked the 50th anniversary of the first nuclear test at Monte Bello Island, with a memorial service and wreath laying.

The service held on the HMAS Creswell (CAPT Andrew Cawley) quarterterdeck was followed by the laying on the sea, from HMAS Huon, of 20 wreaths. The event commemorated the lives of Australians who had been exposed to radiation in the atomic tests and who had given their lives anywhere in the cause of their country.

Organised by Bellambi resident Mrs Olive Sallans, whose husband served in Japan, more than 400 people attended the principal service at Creswell.

Joining them were Navy cadets from training ships Jervis Bay and Shoalhaven, Air Force cadets from Wollongong, the Army Band-Sydney as well as permanent naval personnel. During the service an RAN helicopter did a fly-over while the Navy’s Hydrographer, CAPT Bruce Kafer, delivered the address.
