Students
in transition tour HMAS Cairns facilities
Students
from Badu Island state school visited HMAS Cairns (CMDR Peter Metcalf)
recently as part of their Transition in Education tour.
Twenty year seven students and three teachers were given a general
tour of the base and FIMA Cairns. A tour of HMAS Gladstone (LCDR
Peter Ashen) was conducted by the boats XO, LEUT Andrew Garven.
ADF Recruiting Unit - Cairns representative, PONPC Kerin Smith,
also gave the group a presentation. PO Smith gave the students an
insight into career opportunities in the Navy, as well as naval
living and working conditions.
The Transition in Education tour is an annual tour conducted by
the Badu Island State School.
As there is no high school on Badu Island, students have to leave
the island to complete secondary schooling, thus the tour is the
perfect opportunity to look at both schooling and vocational options.
This years tour included visits to Cairns high schools, TAFE
College and the James Cook University- Cairns campus, as well as
local businesses.
