Rumbling slowly aboard Tarakan the Kalmar heavy lift vehicle has a telescopic boom lifting up to 24 tonnes.
HMAS Tarakan (LCDR Dave Hannah) utilised a recent visit to Townsville to catch up with instructors from the Maritime Wing of the Army Logistic Training Centre.

One of them had an unusual request - to determine whether an LCH could load its latest peice of equipment.

Tarakan sailed up river to Ross Island and successfully embarked the 51 tonne “monster” at high tide.

Recently acquired, the Kalmar Rough Terrain Cargo Handler uses a telescopic boom to transport and stack ISO containers.

The Kalmar has a lift capacity of over 24 tonnes and can operate on a hard surface or unimproved terrain such as a beach.
