Safe Base under review

Commanders of Defence bases have been asked to ensure appropriate measures are in place to move to higher levels of alert in the Safe Base security system, if necessary.

On Wednesday, November 20 the PACC Media Centre told of the review in a media release.

Since September 11, Defence has been on heightened alert with extra security measures put in place at bases around Australia, the Centre said.

Increased guarding was one of the measures.

Defence has reviewed the Safe Base protective alert status in light of the non-specific and generalised terrorist threat against Australia as announced by the acting Attorney General on November 19.

“The Secretary and Chief of the Defence Force believe the current heightened security measures and the extra vigilance adopted since September 11 continue to provide an appropriate level of protection to Defence people and assets,” the Media Centre said.

“In addition, as a prudent planning measure, they have asked all base commanders to ensure appropriate measures are in place to move to higher levels of alert if necessary.”
