At sea only 12 hours HMAS Gawler’s boarding party secures the type three FFV while her RHIB waits alongside.
HMAS Gawler (LCDR Chris Tziolis) boarded and apprehended a Type 3 Foreign Fishing Vessel (FFV) less than 12 hours after sailing from Darwin recently.

Gawler had just completed a 16-week period that included a refit at Darwin Ship Repair and Engineering. The last two months of post refit activity, and in particular the tasks of bringing the ship out of refit and completing endless trials, assessments and inspections, represented significant challenge to Gawler’s team.

The period culminated in a workup and operational readiness evaluation (ORE) that took place in the Northern Australia exercise area in October. Gawler then sailed for patrol, when she apprehended the FFV within 12 hours of sailing. She will spend the next six weeks patrolling the boundaries of the Australian Exclusive Economic Zone in support of Operations RELEX II and Cranberry prior to a well-deserved break over the Christmas period.

For an insight into life in a Fremantle class patrol boat, a perusal of the photo gallery on HMAS Gawler’s web page at www.navy.gov.au is highly recommended.
