Tobruk delivers builders, heavy gear to remote North

No item too big. The Kalmar is loaded onto HMAS Tobruk for the return journey to Brisbane.
No item too big. The Kalmar is loaded onto HMAS Tobruk for the return journey to Brisbane.
HMAS Tobruk (CMDR Peter Laver), one of the RAN’s three “can do” ships, has successfully brought back home the Army’s Brisbane based 21 Construction Squadron and its array of heavy machinery.

The heavy transport and her ship’s company collected the soldiers from Broome last month.

Six months earlier the ship delivered the squadron to the north-west Australian port. Since then, the squadron has been involved in the latest phase of the ATSIC Army Community Assistance Program (AACAP) in outback Lombardina.

AACAP is a joint initiative between ATSIC, the Army and the Federal Department of Health and Aged Care (DHAC).

Under AACAP the Army contributes personnel and equipment to provide housing and infrastructure such as water, sewerage, power, waste disposal and roads in remote high need communities identified by ATSIC.

Tobruk is a regular visitor to northern Australia and has been in the region since August.

Alongside in Broome she hosted visits by cadets, while the ship’s Australian Rules side played the locals but went down in a hard fought match.
