More than 5000 members of the public are expected to flock on to Garden Island/ Sydney on Sunday, November 24 for a “Naval Heritage Day.”

They will arrive by shuttle bus and ferry.

The historic gardens on the naval base will be open to the visitors along with the 128 year-old barque James Craig, the minehunter HMAS Norman and a navigation training vessel.

There will be performances by the RAN Band/Sydney, the Federation Guard and the Heritage Marine Corps.

Tours of the historic gardens will include a call at the site of Australia’s first graffiti, a visit to Australia’s first lawn tennis court and the historic signal station atop the island.

There will be an exhibition of paintings and photographs while Task Force 72 members will display their model warships.

The conning tower of one of the Japanese submarines which attacked Sydney in 1942 will be on display.

The open day will run from 10am to 4pm.

Access is via the main Garden Island gate or by special ferry from Circular Quay, with food and drinks available.
