Competing for back-to-back premierships, the ADFA Inline Hockey Club played in the ACT Inline Hockey grand final in Canberra on September 22.

The ADFA Guards pulled off one of the most convincing victories of the year to crush the top-placed Gators, 12-1.

After a slow start to the season, while team members grew accustomed to each other, the Guards played with more spirit and determination in the closing games.

Club President, OFFCDT Nathan Kirby attributes the victory to the commitment displayed by club members throughout the year.

Team manager, MIDN Gideon Creech was most impressed that all eight team members got their names on the score sheet, and was equally impressed by team goalie MIDN Sam Fairall-Lee who managed a 94 percent goal stop rate, saving the Guards from a more modest victory.

“I’m really happy that the ADFA Guards can improve this much in one year, hopefully with the growing club numbers next year they will be able to go onto even greater things,” said MIDN Creech.

Club captain, OCDT Eric Bettanin said one of the best things about playing on a tri-service team is the way the team chooses to set aside Service differences every week to compete strongly.

However he is wary that this united tri-service tenacity will be disrupted next year when the ADF National Inline Hockey Tournament is contested.

The three Service teams will play a combination of six games in one weekend to decide who will be included in the 2003 Defence Inline Hockey team.

Player shortages may result in a combined Army/Navy team. Consequently any inline hockey players (especially Navy) who wish to play are requested to email OFFCDT Nathan Kirby at n.kirby@student.adfa.edu.au.
