For LSATA Carl Stewart, the whirr of a Squirrel at 723 Squadron is matched only by the purr of his Datsun 1600 on weekends as part of the GMR rally team.

The GMR stands for Good Mates Rallying and personifies Carl’s venture into his weekend pursuit that he hopes to get more serious about next year.

Carl recently competed in his third rally this year, the Caltex Starmart Rally of Queanbeyan, where he placed 7th in his class and 28th overall.

“I really want to have a go at the ACT Series next, which means six rallies in 12 months,” Carl said.

It all starts again in February where he will take on numerous forest roads in the ACT and NSW south coast region in an effort to win the series title.

“To do that I’ll need sponsors, mainly to help out with the cost of entry fees, tyres and fuel,” he said.

With fellow Navy compatriot and team manager ABATA Zul Naim at 816 Sqn, Carl and his good school mates will put their knowlege of motors to the test to keep the trusty Datsun 1600 going strong.

And so far they are doing a good job, recording the fastest time in their class during one stage of the Queabeyan rally. Only a flat tyre cost them an even better result.
“I really enjoy getting out in the different conditions, from the bush tracks to pine forests,” said Carl.
