On
Tuesday, October 15, HMAS Penguin Commanding Officer CMDR John Shevlin
opened the new extensions to the HMAS Penguin Sport and Recreation
Facility.
After years of squeezing into a 15 x 20-metre space, conversion
of the old carport area adjacent to the existing gym has expanded
the user capacity upwards to 100 personnel, allowing weight, boxing,
and cardio classes to be conducted concurrently.
In front of a selected gathering which included WO(N) David Turner,
CMDR Shevlin thanked all PT and contracted staff who contributed
over the previous years to finally make this a reality.
With doubling of diving courses in the New Year, CMDR Shevlin stated
that Penguin is very much a focal point of training in the RAN and
now has the facilities to meet that challenge.
After the unveiling, representatives from diving, medical, hydrographic
and Defence civilians present were encouraged by CPOPT Downey to
make use of the updated facility and the value of maintaining mental
and physical conditioning in the current operational climate.
