Students enjoy sleepover of a different kind

Fifty-six year 3 students from Canberra Grammar School, recently spent the night onboard HMAS Manoora (CMDR Robert Morrison) at Fleet Base East.

Accompanied by ten teachers and parents, the visit coincided with a school excursion to Sydney, and provided the students with a Navy experience they will not soon forget.

CMDR Morrison welcomed the visitors, before they were shown their hammocks for the night by their Manoora guides. The group, who were accommodated in the embarked forces mess deck, witnessed damage control evolutions and toured all the nooks and crannies of the ship. After dinner with the duty watch, the CO briefed the visitors on Manoora, before they turned in.

The following morning the students were given a tour of historic Garden Island to help them with their ‘Discovery of Australia’ school project, before departing mid morning to continue their Sydney excursion. Teacher in charge, Mr Chris Jackman, thanked the CO and ship’s company of Manoora for the visit and commented that many of his students are now keen on a Navy career. It was a tired but very happy group of students that departed on the Wednesday morning.
