ADF Sports Noticeboard

Basketball
ADF Combined Services Basketball Championships at RAAF Base Wagga from November 8-16 in a state against state format. Further information from CPL Ken Robertson on 02-6937 4123.

Canoeing
Nominations are invited for competitors and groundcrew to compete in the 2002 Inter-Service Canoeing Championships from December 26, 2002 - January 2, 2003, held in conjunction with the Red Cross Murray River Canoe Marathon, covering 400kms in five days. RAAF selection trials will be held from December 6-9, covering 200kms in three days. Competitors of any experience may enter but must have own life jackets and other personal equipment. Cricket
The 2002 ADF National Cricket Carnival will be held in Brisbane from November 13-15. The New Zealand Defence Force has been invited to attend for the first time to compete against the best the Australian Services can muster. At the completion of the carnival, the ADF national team will be named, with matches planned against the Queensland Bulls U19s and the New Zealand Defence Force Team.

Golf
ADF Golf Association’s 18th annual National Golf Championships at the Federal Golf Club in Canberra from December 9-13. An information and entry package can be obtained from the ADFGA’s regional representatives. Download copies can be located on the ADFGA website (www.sportscentreoz.com/adfgaindex.htm), or a copy can be requested by emailing adfga@austarmetro.com.au.

The Naval Golf Association of NSW is hosting the 2002 Sir David Martin Charity Golf Day on Thursday, November 14 at the Camden Valley Golf Club. A fourball ambrose event will make a shotgun start at 9am, with registration from 7.30am. Cost of $40 (tax deductible) includes two meal tickets, two drinks and one golf ball. Netball
ADF Netball Association National Titles in Sydney from October 14-18. Categories for women, men and mixed teams (men especially encouraged to nominate a team). Combined Service teams will compete in regions. Further information from CAPT Carla Watts 02-6055 4607, or LT Simon Jackson 02-6055 4701.

Running
The NSW Inter-Service Cross Country Championships will be held on Tuesday, October 15 at the Sydney Field, Holsworthy Barracks from 7.30am. Event open to all Navy, Army, Air Force and Defence civilians from units and ships within NSW. Prizes for champion unit/ship, plus 1st, 2nd and 3rd in open and veteran categories for men and women. This year’s Bonshaw Cup at HMAS Harman will incorporate Melbourne Cup day, so start planning for your work area to spend the day at Harman in what promises to be a lot of fun. Softball
The Australian Defence Softball Association National Championships will be held at RAAF Base Richmond from November 18-22.

Touch Football
The ADF Touch Association National Championships will be held at Randwick Barracks in Sydney from December 7-10. Further information from ADFTA president MAJ Michelle Breen on 02-6266 7423.

Yachting
The Royal New Zealand Navy has invited the ADF Sailing Association to participate in this year’s Lindaver Coastal Classic, starting in Auckland on October 25 and finishing in Russell, Bay of Islands. The ADFSA therefore invites ADF personnel to nominate for the following team positions: Skipper/Manager - must hold at least AYF TL4 Coastal Skipper Certificate, current Restricted Radio Operator’s Licence and have relevant yacht racing experience. Desirable to hold current Level 2 First Aid, and AYF Safety and Survival at Sea certificates; Mate - must hold at least AYF TL4 Coastal Skipper Certificate, current Restricted Radio Operator Licence and have yacht racing experience. Desirable to hold current Level 2 First Aid, and AYF Safety and Survival at Sea certificates; two watch leaders - experienced sailors who are competent to train and lead their watch; five crew - sailing experience is preferable, but not essential. Individuals need to be reasonably fit and willing to learn. The ADF team will be required to be in NZ from October 20 to November 2. Although an ADFSA grant is likely, participants should plan on self-funding their involvement.
