Womens
rugby union in the RAN will take its first great leap forward when
a squad of 17 ventures to the Bangkok International Sevens tournament
from October 24-29.
The RAN Rugby Union (RANRU) team will contest the event against
teams such as the Singapore Blacks Firsts and Youth sides, the Hong
Kong Hooters, Sri Lankan Army, Mahasarakham (Thailand), Royal Thai
Air Force, Bangkok University and Samut Sakhorn (Thailand).
RANRU national manager, WO Simon Kelly said there has been considerable
interest in this inaugural tour which he hopes will set a precedent
for what will be an exciting event.
The kudos for getting this team together should go to the
team coach LS Joey Cameron, who has been involved with this since
its inception 12 months ago, said WO Kelly.
He added that initially there was much reluctance to release players
from duty, but they now have a team of 12 players, with three management
staff, a tour leader and a referee.
The interest in womens rugby in the Navy is definitely
there, but we are still in the formative years, said WO Kelly.
The representative achievements of LEUT Paige Butcher and LEUT Nyree
Osieck as members of the Australian Wallaroos Womens Rugby
Union side have also paved the way for future players to tred.
A further eight Navy players will make up an Australian Services
Rugby Union (ASRU) side to contest a national Australian Rugby Union
carnival at Narrabeen in Sydney from October 6-11.
