NSW team at least dressed for success
November 27, 2000
The NSW Inter-Service Golf Championship was conducted at Thurgoona Golf
Course on the Murray River from October 22-28, with the Navy team was weakened
considerably by six last-minute changes, mainly due to work commitments.
This left Navy with 15 players from a possible 17, meaning team manager
CPO Tony Yarnold was also required to take to the course in what is potentially
his last appearance for Navy.
Unfortunately this was not necessarily to the team's advantage with CPO
Yarnold being nicknamed 'The Don' after two successive scores over 100 preceding
the team events.
The Feltix Cup was taken out by RAAF, a 17-player strong team that looked
hard to beat from the outset. Army also suffered work commitment shortfalls
fielding only 12.
Navy did take out the dress stakes, however both RAAF and Army are creeping
up on Navy with team uniforms of a high standard.
The NSW Navy champion 2000 was team captain PO Peter Simpson of ALBATROSS
with a score of 159 over two rounds.
The Navy team sponsor, Bellinger Instruments of Rydalmere, has supported
Navy golf for several years, in particular the inter-service team. Their
support has been nothing less than outstanding and much appreciated by Navy
golfers.
The final NSW Navy team, aka 'The Thurgoona 15' was: AB Frank Green, AB
Paul Triffet, LS James Bowden, LS Glenn Petersen, LS Graeme Reilly, PO Ike
Bamford (Selector), PO Byron Dunkley, PO Tom Kolosko, PO Mark Nowakowski,
PO Peter Simpson (captain), CPO Peter Calvert, CPO Timo Maensivu, CPO Brendan
Woodsell, CPO Tony Yarnold (manager) and LEUT Dave Barnes.
