November 27, 2000

Clearance Diving preparations for the 2000 Olympic Games commenced in 1997
With the initial plans establishing total equipment and manpower available for the games. With this in mind a billet was established at Maritime Headquarters for duties with Joint Task Force 112.

The billet was positioned at the Olympic Security Command Centre in the Bomb Management Project. The first incumbent was LCDR Dave Hughes, however, on the Jan 24 2000 LEUT Russ Cronin took up the challenge and was welcome onboard by commander JTF 112 BRIG Gary Byles, followed shortly by Superintendent Garry Smith the Senior Bomb Management Coordinator.

The Clearance diving position within the OSCC Bomb Management Project was responsible with the management of underwater high risk and low risk search and also providing the NSWPS with assistance with the integration of combined ADF and NSWPS IEDD operations. Attending the ever-amounting Marine Security and Bomb Management meetings it was clear that the task in front of the ADF was the biggest piece time operation ever undertaken. Once firmly familiarized with the never ending Olympic acronyms the task of writing combined SOP's for the diving and IEDD procedures was completed by LEUT Russ Cronin, INSP Mal Jeffs and SGT Kevin Sullivan.

The first Olympic tasking was in support of the Olympic Torch Relay, which involved members of the PNF and ANRDT's. On the 12 Jun LEUT Sion Griffith's and four members from AUSCDT ONE along with POCD Peter Davies from NHQ South Queensland commenced the lockdown of Sun Dale Bridge at the Gold Coast. They then proceeded with the Olympic Torch Relay in Brisbane, Harvey Bay, Fraser Island. Then it was off to Northern Queensland where the Northern Australian Clearance Diving Detachment (NACD Det), under the control of POCD Bradley Stafford, where responsible for the lockdown of, the Palm Beach The torch support then flew to Thursday Island where under the eyes of POCD Hurley, the divers lockdown the jetty's at Horn Island and Thursday Island, and also a local pearling lugger. The next activity with the torch was in WA where POCD Bob Gruin and members of AUSCDT FOUR locked down the Perth and Fremantle yacht clubs. The final torch activity for the clearance divers was down in sunny Tasmania where CPOCD Karl Price and ANRDT Ten conducted lockdown searchers in Devenport and Hobart.

On the 15 Aug 2000 the Olympic Security agencies commenced lockdown of all Olympic Venues. The Bomb Management Control Centre (BMCC) located inside the Olympic Precinct Regional Operations (OPRO) housed at the Sydney Police Centre (SPC) was manned by four MCDO's on the CD desk.. LCDR Russ Crawford, LCDR Dave Phillipson, and LEUT's Sion Griffith and Russ Cronin issuing a total of 206 PPS and SNS tasks during the period of the games.

Then it was into supporting the Paralympic Games from October 18 to 29.
