Several score of RAN personnel continue to do yeoman service in East Timor.

While HMAS JERVIS BAY and her ship's company of 25 continue to make regular trips from Darwin to the island, the 26 officers and sailors of the heavy landing craft LABUAN and BALIKPAPAN are making regular supply runs.

Ashore, officers and sailors have pivotal roles in the UNTAET operation.

OBSERVER

One is a UN Observer while another is doing legal duties.
Another is a chaplain while another is a liaison officer with the FALANTIL.

Some are working with the Australian National Command Element while one sub lieutenant is employed at air operations.

Other have roles at Joint Movement Control and Maritime Operations Cell.

In the early stages of the East Timor operation the RAN had a dozen ships and nearly 2000 officers and sailors in the region.
