ASRU women right on track

August 7, 2000

The ASRU women's squad which
has achieved unprecedented
success this year.
ASRU women played an ACT development squad in cold and wet conditions at ADFA number one ground on June 29.

ASRU won convincingly 27 to 7.

The game was used as a confirmation of the training and game structure that had been set in place over the previous four days.

Despite the conditions, ASRU played to the game plan and set the ball behind ACT's defensive line which allowed the second and third phase ball to be recycled quickly.

The quick ball allowed the backline to exploit the gaps out wide.

The support play and communication, especially in the forwards, was good.

The restarts provided the players with a good opportunity to practise the moves against good opposition.

All in all it was a good game which gave the players a confidence boost prior to the first game of the Australian championships.

The Australian Women's Championships were held at West Belconnen Leagues Club in Canberra between July 2 - 8 with ASRU women up against Victoria in the first game of the competition on July 2.

ASRU were clearly placed as the underdogs in not only this game but the whole pool B competition.

The opening points came after only nine minutes with fullback AB Jamie Blazejewski kicking a penalty goal.

The first try came late in the first half after a well placed kick from ASRU inside centre, CPL Cassandra Sutton who regathered and scored.

The next try came only a few minutes later, right on half-time when ASRU captain, Serena Monks, crossed giving her team a 16-0 lead.

The second half was full of strong running rugby and good support play, however it wasn't until the last 10 minutes when Jamie Blazejewski crossed the Victorian line.

The final score was 21 - 0.

The second game took place on July 4 with ASRU lining up against Western Australia.

Once again the ASRU came away victorious, 20 - 0.

The third and final game of the pool was played in freezing and wet conditions on July 6 against South Australia.

ASRU won 5 - 0.

The game against pool A fourth place getters, Northern Territory, saw a number of ASRU injuries and despite the team's best efforts the result was a 46 - 0 loss.

Three ASRU players were selected for the Walleroo squad (ABDVR Serena Monks, LEUT Paige Butcher and LSCSO Jamie Blazejewski), with another four gaining selection for the Walleroo state sides.

The team are expected to become a dominant force in national championships.
