Divers help out

August 7, 2000

On Monday 12 June, RAN diving school staff and basic and advanced CD trainees were in transit to Triangular Island, located in Shoalwater Bay.

After a brief stopover at Brisbane Airport, POCD Marshall, LSMEDU Max Walker and two advance CD trainees, P/POCD Mick Nobes and P/POCD Stevens, were about to board a flight to Rockingham when a passenger in front of them collapsed with a stroke.

The divers responded quickly and took charge of the situation, performing CPR and EAR continuously for 15 - 20 minutes until the paramedics arrived.

Once relieved, they boarded their flight to Rockingham, enjoying two weeks in the mud of Triangular Island as a dubious reward.

Meanwhile, CPOCD Tim Hayes and LSCD Darren Timms sailed for a leisurely day on Sydney Harbour.

During the day they noticed a yacht, the 'Rameses', jibe violently in a strong wind-shift, with two of the crew struck by the boom and knocked overboard.

Both crewmen surfaced, but one was observed was floating face down.

Without hesitation, Tim and Darren motored to the rescue in their inflatable rubber boat, pulled the pair out of the water, and proceeded to Northwood Wharf, attending to them as best they could.

Injuries included, for one, superficial bruising, and the other, severe head and facial injuries.

Another witness to the accident was an employee of Sydney Waterways, who called the ambulance service to meet Tim and Darren alongside.
