HMAS CERBERUS, in association with Defence Corporate Support, has initiated the first Internal Safety Auditors Course for Defence.

The course was conducted at the Initial Training Faculty HMAS CERBERUS.

The course is seen as a significant milestone in safety management.

The Commanding Officer HMAS CERBERUS, CAPT John Walton, opened the course stressing the importance of safety management within Defence and the benefits of having Workplace Safety Management Systems audited.

The course was conducted by QAS (Quality Assurance Services), a subsidiary of Australian Standards, using the Victorian Safety Map principles and applying them to the Safety Management Audit Tool developed by the Defence Safety Management Agency (DSMA) specifically for the Department of Defence.

On satisfactory completion of the post course assignment the 19 participants will be registered with the Quality Society of Australasia as accredited internal safety auditors for the Department of Defence.

DSMA, in conjunction with the Defcare Project, have developed a comprehensive suite of safety management tools, including a database for inspections, hazards and audits.

These safety management tools are available on the Defence Intranet (DEFWEB) at dsma.deb.defence.gov.au and additional information can be obtained by calling DSMA's 24 hr Helpline on 1800 019 955.
