Praise for Navy bike team

August 7, 2000

The RAN's charity bike team has come in for some outstanding plaudits from two organisations it has helped.

Two team members, Rick Meehan and Clem Hiscocks, have received special praise.

Since the first ride by the team down the east coast of Australia more than 10 years ago the team has raised $251,000 which has gone to those in need, particularly children.

Letters of praise sent to CN, VADM David Shackleton, came from Dianne Hogden, the administrator of the Down Syndrome Association of NSW and from Louise Martin, the event and fundraising co-ordinator of Special Olympics Australia.

Ms Hogden wrote:" The aim of the Down Syndrome Association is to encourage people with Down Syndrome to fulfil their potential for successful and happy lives in a society which knows their disabilities and is supportive of their needs.

"The association would like to thank the RAN and especially the Navy bike riders for their mammoth effort in raising funds for our association.

This support will ensure the association continues to promote awareness in the community and government of the abilities of people with Down Syndrome so that this knowledge can open up opportunities for full and equal participation.

"We would especially like to thank Rick Meehan for his involvement and organisation of the Navy bike ride. His great efforts are very much appreciated.

"Funding is very difficult to source for registered charities these days and our association like many others, rely on the generosity of organisations such as yours in supporting the association with its mission."

In her letter Ms Martin said: " On behalf of the board, management and athletes of Special Olympics, I would like to acknowledge the support of and thank the Navy Charity Bike Ride Team for its fantastic contribution to the Special Olympics movement in 2000.

"Special Olympics is all about opportunity. The program provides year-round sports training and competition in a variety of sports for people with an intellectual disability.

"The contribution that the team made to Special Olympics NSW and Queensland was remarkable and will assist the programs to provide further opportunities to athletes.

"In particular I would like to acknowledge the contribution Rick Meehan and Clem Hiscocks, whose support undoubtedly contributed to the overwhelming success of the ride."

The RAN's Canberra headquarters added this message : "The Navy congratulates the Navy's Bike Ride Team, particularly the outstanding efforts of Rick Meehan and Clem Hiscocks, in, not only their support of Down Syndrome Association of NSW but also for strengthening Navy's image with the people of Australia…BZ."
