FIMA Darwin with their CDF commendation for outstanding service in support of East Timor operations.
A Chief of Defence Force Unit Commendation has been awarded to FIMA Darwin and Logistic Support Element Darwin for outstanding service in support of International Forces East Timor assigned to Operation Warden.

Darwin sailors proved their worth during Operation Warden, receiving high praise for their professionalism and dedication from RAN units operating between Darwin and East Timor.

The support for landing craft heavy by Fleet Intermediate Maintenance Activity Darwin, led by LCDR Frank Ostrowski, has been outstanding.

While there were two LCH on station in East Timor, FIMA Darwin personnel were supporting another two in Assisted Maintenance Period at Darwin Naval Base.

An additional cradle was manufactured to enable the concurrent docking of two LCHs which enabled the weary and tired ships' companies well earned leave and rest from the area of operations in East Timor.

Support for the LCHs was provided around the clock and in some cases personnel were dispatched to East Timor to carry out repairs and maintenance.

The OIC FIMA Darwin also praised personnel from other FIMAs for their support and assistance during the INTERFET operations.

The Logistics Support Element staff, led by LCDR Andrew Nelson, provided the entirety of logistic support for all RAN and foreign ships assigned to the international force.

Numbering 31 ships from 10 nations, support for the vessels was an overwhelming task. The coordination of port services with fuelling, storing and loading of military and humanitarian cargo was performed consistently within the constraints of a harbour designed for minimal military utilisation.

The consistent service ensured regular and high quality fuel provisions, mail, personnel and urgent spares delivery to ships in Darwin and in the area of operations.

The professionalism and dedication of FIMA and LSE Darwin were of great significance and those concerned deserve praise for their efforts that have been essential and contributed greatly to the effective operation and success of the East Timor mission.
