Sailor Gains Degree

June 14, 1999

LSMED Greg Davis has been steadily working toward his personal goal of providing the best possible service and professionalism in the medical branch of the Navy. He's combined his naval medical training with a civilian nursing degree.

He recently graduated as a registered nurse after completing the University of Sydney's Bachelor of Nursing degree.

Greg said: " I'd like to see other sailors get out there and do it too, if they want to because I believe procrastination is your worst enemy."

Despite the heavy work load of combining naval duties and study - largely in the civilian medical fields - Greg believes his motivation and dedication has paid off.

One of the mottos which Greg has held on to is "people who say you can't do it are quite right, they can't do it. But you can."

LS Davis began his naval career as a sonar operator in 1986 and spent eight years as a submariner.

He then completed the medics course at HMAS CERBERUS before posting to HMAS PENGUIN, working in the hospital and completing his phase one task book in minimum time.

He is currently transferring to CERBERUS to do the Phase 4 course which enables him to go to sea as a leading seaman and makes him eligible to be promoted to PO.

Greg topped his medic courses in phase one and three including winning the Lonsdale Award. He also qualified for the prestigious Golden Key Society which means as a student he finished in the top 10 per cent across faculties of his university.

Earlier this year Greg was involved in the Sydney to Hobart rescue operation and during his Adelaide posting he was involved in setting up an upgraded clinic at Port Adelaide for submariners.
