Paying For Force Structure Priorities
- The Defence Reform Program will allow Defence to reallocate approximately
$900m to improve its capabilities with the aim of at least $300m being
annually available for new major equipment/systems purchases. When added
to existing funds, Defence will have available approximately $2,500m -
$2,600m annually for new major equipment/systems purchases at the current
level of overall Defence funding.
- Previous Government decisions mean that Defence has agreements in place
which will result in
approximately $11,000m in new major equipment/systems purchases over the
next 10 years. This leaves approximately $14,000m available for expenditure
on new initiatives over the next 10 years.
- The above chart is broadly illustrative of expenditure on new major
equipment/systems initiatives anticipated over the next 10 years against
Defences four priority areas.
- Types of equipment/systems that Defence anticipates purchasing include:
- Knowledge Edge:
- Airborne Early Warning and Control Aircraft.
- Improvements to Command, Control, Communications and Intelligence systems.
- Air/Maritime:
- Improvements to the fighting capabilities of Defences major surface
combatants.
- Improving the capabilities of Defences fighter force.
- Strike:
- Maintaining the F-111 into the next century.
- Improving Defence's stocks of smart weapons.
- Land:
- Enhancing Army mobility, readiness, structure and firepower.
