Minister Stresses Importance of Aerospace Industry

The Minister for Defence, John Moore, today said the success of the Avalon Air Show demonstrated the increasing importance the international aerospace industry is placing on Australia.

Attending the Australian International Airshow 99 at Avalon Airport in Victoria, Mr Moore said the present and future capability requirements for the Australian Defence Force represent a great opportunity for investment by the international aerospace industry and employment generation.

"This Airshow comes at a time when the Federal Government is planning, or has already approved, more than a dozen major aerospace projects worth $10 billion.

"Given the scale of this investment, the Coalition wants to maximise the potential to further develop and maintain a viable military aerospace industry in Australia."

Around 450 exhibitors from 30 countries are participating in the International Aerospace Expo, held in conjunction with the Airshow. This is a major business event showcasing the capabilities of Australian industry, and it highlights the numerous benefits of doing business in Australia.

"Since its genesis in the 1940s, Australia's aerospace industry has grown to become a sophisticated and competitive supplier to international aerospace markets," said Mr Moore. "Today, the Industry employs around 12,000 people, has turnover exceeding $1.4 billion and generates exports of more than $870 million."

The Minister also highlighted Australia's world class international reputation for research and development in aerospace and related fields.

"Scientists at the Defence Science and Technology Organisation's Fishermens Bend laboratory have made a significant contribution to Australia's defence and international reputation, through the development of cutting-edge aeronautical technology.

"The 'Black Box' flight recorder, aircraft life extension techniques, safe aircraft landing systems, and composite bonded repair technology are now indisputable landmarks in the aeronautical 'Hall of Fame'," Mr Moore said.

"The Federal Government is committed to continued development of a domestic aerospace industry that supports and strengthens Australia's defence.

"The growth in defence aerospace projects suggests a positive outlook for further growth. The challenge is for Australian industry to realise the opportunities presented by this growth," said Mr Moore.
