Australian Minister for Defence the Hon Joel Fitzgibbon flew to Tarin Kowt after receiving news of the death of Lance Corporal Jason Marks. Lance Corporal Jason Marks, a 4 RAR Commando serving with the Special Operations Task Group (SOTG) in Afghanistan was killed on 27 April 2008 in fighting with Taliban extremists in Uruzgan Province, approximately 25km southeast of Tarin Kowt. 4 soldiers were also injured in the battle, and the Minister visited them in the Dutch operated Coalition Hospital where they are being treated. The SOTG operates in support of ISAF security operations and provides security and force protection for the RTF in Uruzgan Province. It consists of Commandos, members of the Special Air Service Regiment and support personnel.
