AFL Fever in the South China Sea

With already three months at sea and several thousand nautical miles away from home, the crew of HMAS Warramunga will have a well deserved pause in their routine on Saturday to watch this years AFL Grand Final between Collingwood and St Kilda.

Despite being a long way from home the crew of HMAS Warramunga have been closely following this years’ AFL season. Loyal supporters can be found proudly displaying their club colours. Whilst almost all clubs were represented amongst the ships crew, the loyal followers were divided on who to support, as their teams had not made the final.

The Australian Naval Frigate HMAS Warramunga, under the command of Commander Bruce Legge, will be in transit to the Chinese port of Zhanjiang when the grand final is played but the cheering of the crew will be heard back in Australia.

The Australian ANZAC class frigate has successfully completed a long schedule of activities that has taken the ship and her crew from Hawaii, to Darwin, Korea and now China before they return to their home port of Perth.

Prior to this final transit to Zhanjiang, HMAS Warramunga spent a few days alongside in the port city of Qingdao as part of a cultural exchange with members of the ships company. The crew had the opportunity to visit iconic Chinese sites such as the Great Wall and Forbidden City.

At the conclusion of the ships visit to China, HMAS Warramunga will head home to HMAS Stirling in Western Australia for a well earned rest after four months away.
